The paper examines the role of road transport and motorization of the population in sustainable economic development of the territories. Motorization of the population is represented as an indicator and a catalyst for sustainable economic development in the region. Road transport system is defined as a major territorial institute: it is shown its role in addressing social and economic problems, increasing mobility of the population, improving the region’s competitiveness in the global economy.
