The role of transport system in sustainable economic development of the area is pointed out. The socio-economic functions of the transport system are defined. The transport system is presented as a territorial institution. Its role in solution of socio-economic territorial problems, population mobility increase, regional competitiveness intensification in the global economy is demonstrated.
